Vera Ryan knew her son Martin as a charming, strong and energetic man, who never had a chance to start a family or develop a career owing to severe learning difficulties. He had Down's syndrome and epilepsy. It took him a while to get to know people because he could not communicate verbally and his behaviour was unusual.But that lifelong condition should not have caused his death at the age of 43.
